National Book Award Winner

Hell of a Book

by Jason Mott

Summary

On a chaotic national book tour, a Black author whose novel is also called 'Hell of a Book' begins to be shadowed by a young boy he calls Soot, whose presence may or may not be real. Mott braids comic set pieces with meditations on police violence, mental health, and the burdens placed on Black artists asked to explain their pain. The novel is restless, metafictional, and emotionally direct.

Historical Context & Significance

Mott used the 'absurdity' of a book tour to explore the very real trauma of racial injustice in America.
