Staying On

by Paul Scott

Summary

Tusker and Lucy Smalley, minor figures in a vanished colonial world, choose to live out their retirement in an Indian hill station long after independence has redrawn their place in it. Scott's tone is tender and gently comic, attentive to the small humiliations and loyalties of a long marriage as well as the larger ironies of empire. The novel functions as both a coda to the Raj Quartet and a moving stand-alone study of late love.

Historical Context & Significance

A sequel to Scott's 'Raj Quartet,' it was seen as recognition for his focus on colonial India.
