The Inheritance of Loss

by Kiran Desai

Summary

In a crumbling house in the Himalayan foothills, a retired judge, his orphaned granddaughter, and their cook live out the tremors of a Nepali insurgency, while the cook's son scrapes by in the kitchens of New York. Desai moves between Kalimpong and Manhattan to trace how colonial legacies, migration, and class still shape ordinary lives. Her tone is both sorrowful and sharply comic.

Historical Context & Significance

At 35, Desai was the youngest woman at the time to win; she is the daughter of Anita Desai.
