The Selfish Gene

Dawkins argues for what he calls a gene's eye view of evolution, that natural selection acts most fundamentally on genes rather than on individual organisms or whole species, and that organisms themselves are best understood as survival machines built by genes purely to carry copies of themselves forward. Drawing heavily on earlier work by George C. Williams and W. D. Hamilton on kin selection, he explains behavior that looks selfless on the surface, a bird's alarm call that draws a predator's attention away from its flock, a worker ant that never reproduces at all, as strategies that actually serve a gene's own narrow interest, since a gene shared with close relatives survives whether or not the individual carrying it personally reproduces. The book works through examples across many species, aggression, parental care, sex ratios, using simple game theoretic reasoning to explain why organisms so often behave in ways that look cooperative on the surface but reduce, on closer inspection, to competition among genes for representation in the next generation. In its final chapter Dawkins steps entirely outside biology to coin the word meme, proposing that ideas, tunes, and cultural habits replicate and compete for space in human minds by roughly the same logic that genes compete inside bodies, a term meant almost as a passing aside that has since outgrown the book that introduced it.
The book is written for a general reader without softening the underlying argument, moving in short, plainly built chapters that accumulate steadily; it reads quickly for a work of science, helped along by Dawkins's fondness for vivid, sometimes provocative metaphor, describing genes as ruthless and selfish, language some readers find clarifying and others find actively misleading, since a gene plainly has no intentions of any kind.
Historical Context & Significance
Oxford University Press published The Selfish Gene in 1976. No dedicated science book prize existed to recognize it on release; nothing comparable to a general science writing award existed in Britain at the time. The book divided working scientists rather than general critics. Peter Medawar called it a most skillful reformulation of the central problems, learned, witty and very well written, while Stephen Jay Gould objected specifically to calling a gene a unit of selection at all, arguing that selection acts on whole organisms rather than on genes in isolation, and philosopher Mary Midgley wrote at length that the book's central metaphor did not hold up under closer scrutiny.
That argument has never fully settled, but the book's influence has: a 2017 Royal Society poll named it the most influential science book ever written, decades after publication, and the word meme it coined almost in passing has since spread into ordinary usage far beyond anything Dawkins originally wrote it to describe. It has been translated into more than twenty languages and remains in print in a substantially expanded edition first issued in 1989.
