This collection pairs polished domestic lyrics with the opening installment of a long poem transcribed, in part, from Ouija board sessions with the dead. Merrill's virtuoso command of meter and rhyme gives the supernatural material a worldly elegance, mixing gossip, theology, and cosmology. The book inaugurated his epic "Sandover" trilogy and expanded the range of what late-century formal verse could attempt.
