What Shaped 2014
2014 was the first year the Booker admitted American writers, a change that was argued about bitterly and that an Australian promptly won, with a novel drawn from his father's captivity on the Burma railway. Klay's stories of Iraq, written by a Marine veteran, did for that war what Tim O'Brien had done for Vietnam. Macdonald's H Is for Hawk trains a goshawk while grieving her father and became the most admired nature book in years.
