What Shaped 1953
Invisible Man is the book from this year that changed the most. Ellison's novel about a Black man moving through an America that refuses to see him beat Hemingway and Steinbeck for the National Book Award and has never left the argument about the great American novel since. The Hugo Awards began at the world science fiction convention in Philadelphia, run by fans rather than critics, which is still how they work.
